چکیده

We used field observations of frost-boil distribution, soils, and vegetation to attempt to validate the predictions of a Differential Frost Heave (DFH) model along the temperature gradient in northern Alaska. The model successfully predicts order of magnitude heave and spacing of frost boils, and can account for the circular motion of soils within frost boils. Modification of the model is needed to account for the observed variation in frost boil systems along the climate gradient that appear to be the result of complex interactions between frost heave and vegetation. Cryogenesis and soil formation along a bioclimate gradient in Arctic North America

[1] In arctic tundra, cryoturbation resulting from frost heave, cracking, and other cryogenic processes produces patterned ground such as nonsorted circles, stripes, nonsorted polygons, and earth hummocks. We studied cryogenic structures and morphological properties of soils associated with patterned-ground features along a bioclimate gradient in Arctic Alaska and Canada from north (subzone A) ...

Differential frost heave model for patterned ground formation: Corroboration with observations along a North American arctic transect

[1] Frost boils in the Arctic are a manifestation of patterned ground in the form of nonsorted circles. Active frost boils involve convection of water through the soil that can bring basic salts from depth to the surface. As such, active frost boils can mitigate acidification and thereby strongly influence the type of vegetation supported by Arctic soils. The presence or absence of active frost...

Amechanism for differential frost heave and its implications for patterned-ground formation

The genesis of some types of patterned ground, including hummocks, frost boils and sorted stone circles, has been attributed to differential frost heave (DFH). However, a theoretical model that adequately describes DFH has yet to be developed and validated. In this paper, we present a mathematical model for the initiation of DFH, and discuss how variations in physical (i.e. soil/vegetation prop...

Frost-Boil Ecosystems: Complex Interactions between Landforms, Soils, Vegetation and Climate

Frost boils in northern Alaska vary from large, 2–3-m diameter, barren non-sorted circles to completely vegetated hummocks. Summer warmth increases southwards from the coast. Average thaw-layer thickness shows the opposite trend. Frost heave shows no trend along the climate gradient but is affected by soil texture. Heave is greatest on frost boils with fine-grained sediments. Biomass increases ...

A Generalized Secondary Frost Heave Model

A generalized model for secondary frost heave is developed based on the one-dimensional model of O'Neill and Miller. Secondary frost heave arises during freezing owing to cryostatic suction effects that can increase the upward water permeation to facilitate ice-lens growth and increased heave. Nondimensionalization and scaling are used to simplify the model equations and to identify a dimension...
